With the last weekend of the summer behind us, I decided to venture out beyond the East Coast and go back to a place I used to call home. Here are some of the pictures from this weekend in Northern California. You can see the rest here. But just because summer is over doesnt mean that summer pictures will come to an end. I still have one last place to shoot before I can prepare for warmth of fall colors and the monochromatic winter.

I’m super happy with this shot that I took earlier today. I cant take all the credit for it, the inspiration came from another photographer who runs a great blog using his favorite shots (sound familiar?). Under each shot he explains in great detail how to achieve the desired effect.
I found Ronan Palliser through this entry from Digital Photography School (another great blog that has taught me a thing or two). Having these two blogs as resources has really helped me look at taking pictures in a new light.

A couple friends of mine are starting their own desserterie (its called Sugar, how awesome is that!), and I might shoot their product pictures. In preparation for that I’ve been practicing my off camera lighting techniques. I think I’m making progress.

Off Camera Lighting

Thanks to my wonderful parents I got a new flash for my camera. The Nikon SB-600 is a great flash to start out with, but I didnt want it for low light shooting. I hate using a flash and will avoid it at all cost if I can. I wanted it because of its off camera capabilities. I wanted to start out with something simple so I decided to see if I could replicate the look of a light box. There was very little post production on these shots (all I really did was clone over the lines).

Whats in my camera bag

When I asked for a D90 as my graduation gift, I knew I liked taking pictures. I took so many shots that first week that I realized, like you realize with your first love, it was no longer just like, but something more. Once I had set my sights on becoming a better photographer, the level of support from my family and friends has been overwhelming. At the beginning of this summer I had a camera, now my bag is almost complete:

Nikon D90 Body

Nikon ML-L3 wireless remote

Nikon 18-105mm f3.5-5.6

Nikon 50mm prime f1.8 (sold)

Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6

Gorillapod flexible tripod

Various Filters (UV, CPL FLD)

Nikon EN-EL3e spare battery

Nikon SB-600 Speed light

Sunpak 54” Tripod

There are always other things that I could need (like a macro lens, but that’s too much to justify at this stage), but my camera bag so far will cover most shooting scenarios and give me control over my compositions without compromise.

And then, there’s all the ideas I got floating around in my head. But that will have to wait for another post.

EDIT: My Nikon 50mm f1.8 has been sold to make way for a 50mm f1.4 and a 24mm f2.8

Yesterday was bright, beautiful and hot. With today’s cold cloudiness I feel like yesterday was Summer’s last hurrah. I hope I’m wrong. Since the new semester is starting where I tutor, I’m probably not. 2009 owes us another summer.
